SUGGESTED CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE

This article assumes that you have selected the size dome that you would like to build, secured the necessary financing, and you have your dome plans in hand.

  1. If you are in an area requiring permits, contact the appropriate government division that handles building permits.
  2. Clear your building site and stake out the location of your dome.
  3. Excavate your site and trench out the footings. Excavations should be approximately 4 feet larger than the dome diameter. FIRMLY SET THE CENTER POINT!
  4. Dig trenches for any under slab plumbing, heating or electrical work.
  5. Install well and septic or hook up to city water & sewer if available.
  6. Apply fill and footing materials and level to grade. *
  7. Erect Permanent wood foundation.
  8. Install main floor supports, joists and sub-floor. (Cap the PWF)
  9. Install Permanent Wood Floor or pour concrete floor.
  10. Install drainpipe around outside of PWF; apply tar and poly to outside walls of PWF. Backfill your site.
  11. Erect Dome Shell. (The most fun part!)
  12. Apply sealant to dome panel joints.
  13. Install all door, dormer openings, extensions, roof vents, chimney, plumbing jacks and the ventilating strip detail as per drawings.
  14. Apply roofing material and exterior siding. (Guess what? The outside is virtually done!)
  15. Frame interior stud walls and install loft and stairways. *
  16. Install all rough plumbing, heating and electrical.
  17. Insulate dome interior and carefully install vapor barrier.
  18. Install all Sheetrock, underlayment and interior paneling.
  19. Install cabinets, counter tops and bath vanities.
  20. Finish plumbing, heating and electrical.
  21. Install finishes and millwork. (Baseboard molding, doors, etc.)
  22. Install finish flooring
  23. Get final inspection.
  24. MOVE IN! (If you haven't already!)

Please note. You are about to undertake perhaps the most rewarding and certainly one of the most arduous tasks of your life. Be prepared to spend a good deal of time on it. A good rule of thumb is 1 1/2 workhours for every square foot of finished floor area. The bigger the dome, the longer it takes. Good Luck!

* Depending upon you locality, these steps may require a visit from your appropriate building inspector. Check the requirements in your area.
